Exotic Shorthair

The Exotic Shorthair cat originated as a cross breed between Persians and American Shorthairs. Originally, breeders were looking to get the Persian's silver color and green eyes for the American Shorthair. However, the cats did not meet the standards of the American Shorthair breed. The new cats looked like Persians but with a short, thick coat. Jane Martinke saw the differences between what the American Shorthair should look like and the new cats crossed with Persians. She recommended a new breed be created for these cats. First called Sterlings because of their silver coloring, the breed eventually became known as the Exotic Shorthair and cats of all colors are now accepted. The International Cat Association first gave recognition to the Exotic Shorthair in June of 1979. The Exotic Shorthair cat would be great for someone who admires the look of a Persian but does not want the work involved with the Persian's coat. Exotic Shorthairs are heavy-set cats with a thick coat. Their faces are adorable with big round eyes and a short face. The head is set on a short, muscular body with short legs matched with a short tail. Their lush coat gives them the impression of being a soft toy that would be perfect to caress. However, do not be fooled by all the fluff of their coats because they are very muscular cats. They come in a variety of colors and patterns. The best part is, they have a beautiful coat that needs little maintenance, just a simple comb through to rid the cat of dead hairs. Once in a while, because of their large eyes, they need their eyes wiped down to avoid irritation. The Exotic Shorthair's behavior makes it a relaxed, laid-back companion. They are friendly and will ask for your attention with a charming look in your direction. Exotic Shorthair's love attention and will be your companion whether you are sitting on the couch watching a movie or doing chores around the house. They also love to play, a trait shared with them by their ancestors, the American Shorthair. Paired with their genuine curiosity, the Exotic Shorthair is bound to keep any owner entertained. Be ready to have lots of fun with these cats by having a few toys. Don't worry if you have no toys, their natural curiosity will enable them to find something entertaining, whether it is a loose piece of paper or watching itself in the mirror! Fun-loving and easy-going, these cats would be an excellent addition in any household, even those with multiple pets and children.
